Always forever | Phoenix Athens
As part of the 7th International Art Festival: Back to Athens, Phoenix Athens Gallery presents the exhibition: Always Forever with works by Ileana Arnaoutou, Anna Fafaliou, Dimitri Yin and Lee Wells.
The COVID 19 lockdown created a climate of uncertainty and apprehension, however it highlighted social, political and ecological problems with greater clarity than ever. Always Forever is an exhibition with a transversal approach that showcases the artists’ notion of physical presence within the social spheres of Athenian society to both conjure and play with the notion of belonging, disorientation and nostalgia in this context. The works reveal complex issues in contemporary Athenian life such as social awareness and inclusion after self-isolation, and raise questions: “how can we restore [a sense of] community with a balanced approach?” and “What does “normal” mean to the Greek citizen?
A new body of work by Dimitri Yin and Lee Wells draws inspiration from recent political currents and social ecology while on the other hand, Anna Fafaliou and Ileana Arnaoutou’s work addresses physicality and the body in society. The exhibition becomes a manifestation of the socio-political situation in Athens as shown through the lens of contemporary artists currently based in Athens. It pays tribute to the economic life-force of the city as well as the resilience and determination of its citizens who continue to contribute to its perpetual creativity and growth.
